Would these then be a similar type of thing to the galls you find on citrus trees? When the wasps lay their eggs and the citrus tree branches and limbs become swollen? I understand a different tree species would mean different things but my citrus trees particularly my lemon trees are covered in swollen galls, some the whole branch is swollen. We call them gall wasps. I have always been curious about them as we are always advised to cut these branches off or use a potato peeler and expose the eggs so they die but I have never liked that idea. I like to know there is a place for every creature and plant/tree. I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks so much :)

Yes, I never pick them from the tree. I wait until they fall to the ground and pick up the ones that are blonde and dry. Those are the ones that have matured into the pith that we use for medicine.
The pink and green ones, are still young and haven't moved into the pith stage

Hi, in my forest, my Oak trees are too tall to take these off of. I do see them all over the forest floor in all colors from green to blonde to dark colored. Can they be picked from the ground if they are the blonde color?

Fascinating! By chance was your presentation recorded and posted any where online? I am enthralled by Oak Apple Galls, that are generously gifted to me by my nurturing Northern Red Oak (if my amateur ID observations are correct) for the last three years. What a coincidence that earlier today I watched a Pepperwood Preserve presentation on ‘Black Oaks Revealed’ by Clint McKay, on YouTube. I have a few other Pepperwood Preserve videos next up on my playlist. From me and my ancient mixed Oak relatives in Washtenaw County, Michigan: THANK YOU for the work you are doing! You are using technology to raise the collective consciousness of the planet by creating a connection between our sacred Oaks (and other plant relatives) and humans. This is the only way forward… a collective awakening to Our dependence upon Mother Nature to survive as a human species. Thank you for contributing to this “great human to land returning”.

Wow that’s so useful to know! Did you take the Ethnobotany class in college? I would love to take a class like this but I’m way beyond my college years.

I've learned recently that oak galls (I always knew them as oak balls) were used by Native Americans to transport a hot coal from camp to camp without having to start from scratch. Have you heard of this or can anyone provide addition info? I tried it, but the coal was cold within a half hour.

I live in an oak woodland which is mostly Blue Oaks and Live Oaks and they do form these galls, too. They look beautiful at the blond stage: sometimes they have almost "red cheeks", which makes them look like little apples. I know about the gall wasps, but had never heard about the use of the galls as a styptic: how wonderful! I had used Cayenne and Yarrow for that, but that's not always practical. It's good to have another trick in the bag, so to speak, and such a beautiful one, too: thanks for sharing that!
