Every spring, I start looking at what’s growing Every spring, I start looking at what’s growing close to the ground.
Those early greens… nettle, chickweed, dandelion, cleavers… they’re not just “weeds.” They’re some of the most nutritious foods we have this time of year- especially useful for the body ready to move out of winter.
One of my favorite ways to use them is in simple pestos. It’s an easy way to bring a variety of fresh plants to your table.
Here are a few I reach for:
🌿 Nettle — mineral-rich, supports energy and rebuilding, helpful for seasonal allergies
🌿 Chickweed — cooling, moistening, supports skin and lymph when things feel stuck
🌿 Dandelion greens — bitter, liver-supportive, helps digestion get moving again
🌿 Mustard greens — antimicrobial, supports the lungs, clears stagnation
🌿 Cleavers — classic lymph mover, supports fluid balance and spring cleansing
🌿 Parsley — nutrient-dense, supports kidneys and digestion, gently toning
🌿 Cilantro — cooling, supports detox pathways, helps clear heat
🌿 Sorrel — tangy, vitamin C-rich, wakes up digestion and the palate
These plants are meant to be used fresh, in season- they are full of minerals and enzymes.
I share my favorite pesto recipes and ways to work these herbs into your meals in my book, The Herbal Kitchen.

There are so many more infused oils than just St. There are so many more infused oils than just St. John's wort, lavender, or calendula (although I do love those oils!).
Springtime is the only time of the year to find chickweed and cleavers, so I wanted to make sure you knew about them.
Chickweed, cleavers, and plantain are easy to find- they grow just about everywhere, and they are some of the most useful oils to keep on hand through spring and summer. These are the plants people walk past without seeing.
Once you start working with them, they become part of your everyday routine and you'll keep your apothecary stocked with them.
Which of these oils are you most curious to try first?
🌿 Save this for when you’re ready to make your own oils and share it with someone who loves working with herbs.
