Let’s do some nasal oiling! I have seen people with nasal congestion, allergies, dry nose, and chronic sinus infections have AMAZING results with this ONE simple and natural home remedy. Find out how to unblock your nose from allergies and lubricate your sinuses…
Using nasal oil for your sinus can be a great self-care practice if you live in a dry climate, before allergy season starts, and when you have nasal congestion from allergies. The benefits of putting oil in your nose can also be experienced when you’re dehydrated, such during travel and after flying.
In this video I walk you through, step-by-step, how to do nasal oiling and how it is going to HELP YOU! At first, many people think, that is so weird! BUT the sinus relief is so significant that they quickly start using it.
This little trick only takes minutes and can help with allergies, colds, and all things snot related. 😊
Is it safe to put oil in your nose?
Nasal oiling is generally safe. However, there are times when you don’t want to put oil in your nasal passages. This home remedy is contraindicated during:
- Pregnancy
- Menstruation
- Nosebleed
- Asthma
- Acute illness
It’s not for children under 7 or people over 75.
Which oil is best for your nose?
For nasal congestion and dryness, I like using sesame oil, which is also nice and warming. Be sure to use organic and unrefined sesame oil. Unrefined means that it hasn’t been processed with solvents and chemicals.
Olive oil is a good second choice. Again, you want organic and unrefined.
Avoid using coconut oil or essential oils.
When you do nasal oiling, make sure that the oil is warm. Do not use room temperature or cold oil in your sinuses. Also, make sure the oil is not too hot and that it’s comfortable for your nasal passages. Do a little spot test on your wrist to check for comfort.
Thank you Kami I will try this!! Love the idea of keeping bacteria at my nose And sinuses!!
Thank you so much! I have suffered from allergic rhinithis my whole life. Have submitted to surgeries, have done immunotherapy. But nasal oiling is definitely life changing. I am from brasilia, Brazil. So glad I have found this page. Again, thank you!!
Welcome!
This sounds interesting, a friend told me her doctor advised coconut oil but you’re saying otherwise. Why do you advise against the coconut oil?
Coconut oil is damp and heavy, not so good for sinuses or congestion.
I’m wondering if this is good for Covid caused parosmia. I’ve put sesame oil inside the nose (when this is flaring up), but never sniffed it up that way.
Thank you for the reminder Kami. I remember when in India we were small children , my father was used to put oil in our nose every evening .
Hi Kami,
You don’t mention this in your video, but emphasize it in your email, regarding only using warm oil. I’ve been using Nasya oil (an ayurvedic blend) for years and I’ve never heard of warming the oil before use. Can you explain why you said not to use room temperature oil, and share how you warm it for daily application? Thanks!
In Ayurveda, temperature is an important part of the therapy. You absolutely can do it with room temperature oil, but adding a little bit or warmth to the oil aids in the therapeutics of this technique. Just like taking a warm bath relaxes your muscles. Warming the oil, makes it easier for the body to absorb. Or also think of gargling, if you warm your gargling water it is more effective
How do you warm the oil?
Warm the small bottle (1 oz like I show in the video) with your warm hands or in a mug of hot water
When I was a child I suffered from bloody noses. As a teenager I started putting vaseline on a q-tip and rubbing it inside my nostrils. Now that I am more informed I no longer use mineral/petroleum oils on my body and dry nasal membrane hasn’t been an issue for years, but I will use the sesame oil when it is and I find this to be a great remedy. Thank you!
Why should those over 75 not use nasal oiling?
Hi Liz, it is not that anyone over 75 should not do nasal oiling. Nasal oiling can be intense and can move a lot of congestion at once, so it is something that I say to approach with caution as we age.
Kami I do love you, am doing this on my husband as he has blocked ears. And anybody with a cough or mucus.kami honey and fennel, ginger, black pepper.is fantastic.my 91yr old mum, has suffered with this on and off for years, but no more.no doctors could do anything.thank you so much x
Kami, which sesame seed oil do you like to use?
Any unrefined, organic sesame oil (not toasted) is good.
LOVE sesame oil! It’s called the “king of oils” in ayurveda, and it’s amazing also for oil pulling in the mouth… look it up, amazing benefits for teeth/gums/overall health. So it’s worth the investment for an organic sesame oil. Thumbs up!
You’re great Kami! On the other hand seeing the oil drip down your nose did make me gag a bit! hahaha! 😉
After testing , I found I was allergic to everything that grows here in the desert. I was on prescription meds for several years but a pharmacy tech friend yelled “macular degeneration” each time I refiled a script. My doctor then prescribed a nasal spray that did not pass the blood brain barrier. The insurance company dropped the spray after a year or so. The doctor then told me about coating the nostrils with olive oil to trap the hisimines. IT WORKED! my allergies began to get better. That is why I concur with your nasal oiling. I already know… Read more »
I’m gonna try it…sounds great and you were a good sport to show us how. I’m an allergy(hayfever to grasses) sufferer…hope it helps! Thank you!
Haha, i know, a bit of a feat doing this in front of video!!
So I’m still a bit confused. Does the sesame in the oil have anything to do with getting the congestion to come out, or just the oil itself? I really enjoy reading your posts. I’ve used the honey/turmeric/cardamom/pepper (whatever else was in it) combo for congestion and it really seemed to help me.
You can use other oils, sesame oil in itself has a warming action so that is why i like it
Hi Cami, My question has to do with sinus infection and using the netty pot. I’ve had a sinus infection for almost 3 weeks. As soon as I could breathe I started using the netty pot but it’s not gong away. So would the oil be better? The netty pot is drying.
HI Hill,
Yes, you are so right, the neti pot can be drying. I like to do the neti pot, wait an hour and then do nasal oiling.
First let me say thank you for all that you do for us readers. But my question is since I don’t necessarily have any congestion but I do get frequent sinus headaches due to having just wood heat. I have been using saline nasal spray the last couple of years & it helps a lil but not much. Would the nasal oiling help the sinus headaches? And can I use just plain olive oil that I already have in my kitchen?
HI Stephanie,
You are welcome.
I like to do saline net-pot first and then wait a little bit, maybe an hour or more and then do nasal oiling.
and yes you can use olive oil for your nasal oiling.
Thank you Kami your such wealth of knowledge 🙏 I am going to try this.
Hi, Kami ~
How does nasal oiling compare to nasal irrigation (neti pot, style), in terms of effectiveness or purpose?
Hey Cecilia,
Neti pot irrigation is also awesome for clearing congestion. However, over time, it can dry things out. I like to use them together. I like to do neti pot in the morning and nasal oiling in the evening.
They both work really well for allergies and sinus congestion. If you tend to dry out easier, you might want to try nasal oiling. It is somewhat of a personal preference. But try nasal oiling and see what the difference for you is….
you are one cool lady!!! Must get some sesame oil!
Kami, you make me laugh out loud, you’re so very genuine! Thanks for this info. I believe I have a long-standing sinus congestion/infection that I’m now addressing, so your info is timely. I’m snuffing a cayenne herbal mix and silver nasal spray. It’s helped (yuck and yay!) but I’m looking forward to trying the oil snuffing too -just have to get the oil. Will let you know the results, but I promise, not too much detail!
Haha!
So nothing added? No herbs soaked in the oil ahead of time? Is unrefined, organic seseame oil the ONLY oil you can use?
Yep, you can use plain sesame oil. You can use other oils also, some people use olive oil.
Great info! Thanks! Will definitely try this??
Hi, Kami – I don’t have allergies or much congestion, but my husband has lived with it all his life. I had him listen to your class on nasal oiling – he was really interested. He has been doing it for a couple of weeks (actually getting quite adept at it!) One day his ear was plugged and painful. In the past this could end up with him in bed with a cold washcloth across his face! With the first oiling of the day, the pain went away, still felt pressure. With the second oiling the pressure went away and… Read more »
OH yes, I love this story! Yep, i have had my ears clear from nasal oiling also! SO glad it helped!!!
Would putting the oil in ear help too, or is that not a good idea?
HI Paula,
PUtting a few drops of warm oil in the can help some people. HOwever, I have to say that if you have any kind of ear infection, the oil can make it worse. I know this goes against the grain with so many people using mullein oil in the ear. I have seen herbal oils help and make ear infections worse.
