“The problem is that when we focus on only using the intellect with our herbal studies, without a doubt, the information is harder to retain, remember and embody.”
In the big wide world of herbal studies, there are a few big frustrations that I hear about over and over again:
People tell me they feel overwhelmed, overloaded with information that doesn’t connect and distracted from being able to follow through or settle into a useful routine with their home herbal studies.
Just in the past week I’ve received emails with these comments:
“I have an entire cupboard of herbs and supplements that I don’t completely understand and don’t follow through in using”
“There is so much to learn, memorizing it all keeps my head spinning, my head feels clogged with data and I feel scattered in my herbal learning”
“I’m already overloaded with the demands of daily life and am falling short on learning everything there is to do to keep my family well”
Ok, let’s go to bat with this whole overwhelm thing.
Want to know my tried and true approach for dealing with overwhelm, distraction, follow through burnout and feeling like you don’t ever know enough??
Relationship. Yep. Relationship.
Not just, “Hey how ya doin’?” kind of relationship.
The deep kind of relationship where you REALLY connect.
I am talking about deep connected relationship with plants.
There has been an unfortunate trend in our education that applies to our herbal education as well.
I recognized the problem with this in my own herbal journey.
In my early years of studying herbs, I remember my brain burning trying to memorize everything. I wondered how people ever got organized, connected the dots and made sense of everything and figured I was doing something wrong or just didn’t have what it took…
I’d like to share what helped me overcome my obstacles to overwhelm and help you feel more relaxed, settled and integrated with your herbal studies.
The problem is that when we focus on only using the intellect with our herbal studies, without a doubt, the information is harder to retain, remember and embody.
When you establish deep plant relationships first, it’s like creating the foundation or a nice cushy bed for everything else to land in.
The clinical studies, constituents, specific uses all have a place to land when you’ve got deep plant communication at the heart of your studies.
Even if you don’t quite understand what deep plant communication is yet, let me start by telling you that by accessing your innate human capacity to perceive, understand and implement direct communication from the plants, you will improve your retention rate, focus, follow through and confidence in working with your herbal medicines.
I’ve had lots of questions about just what exactly is plant communication and deep plant relationship.
So, I shot this video where I talk about direct plant communication and how it can bridge the gap in your home herbal studies so that you can feel nourished and rejuvenated instead of overwhelmed and overloaded.
Check it out below.
If you are learning about how to use herbs to take better care of your family, you’ve got your herb books, you’re taking great herb classes and trying lots of medicine making techniques and delicious recipes.
However, there is another piece to learning herbal medicine that will take your studies to a deeper, more personalized level… And that is learning to perceive communication directly from the plants themselves.
Truly effective herbal studies is made up of half intellect and half direct relationship with the plants.
Great herb books are everywhere, but there isn’t a lot of support for clearing the obstacles to direct plant connection and building confidence in being guided by the plants themselves.
Activating your direct perception communication with the plants sets the stage for a more embodied herbal studies and actually makes the book learning easier!
Our nervous system is wired to perceive communication from more than just humans. It is just that our culture for the most part doesn’t talk about it or even acknowledge it.
Accessing this basic human capacity is not difficult, with just a little effort and guidance it is easily activated and then can be used any time you like when working with the plants.
The thing is, you don’t have to be a spiritual guru to do this. We all have access to this ability; indeed, we are hard wired for it.
What is plant communication?
Here are 4 things to think about.
1) How do plants communicate?
2) How do I activate and nourish my innate capacity and uniqu channels of perception?
3) How do interperit what I perceive? How can I trust what I get and not think I am just making something up in my head?
4) How do I apply what I perceive in a way that is practical and responsible?
Leave me a comment below, let me know your thoughts about plant communication and what your’re struggling with the most in your herbal studies.
Best wishes,
I feel plant communication is the best way to build our instinctual nature. As you so aptly say, nature has been there since the very beginning of time. working and supporting us. I don’t memorize well, and instinct has been an important guide, in so many corners of my life. Thank you Kami for continuing your important work. Love, Jeanne
Thank you for your video. It makes sense to me when you say that we are all made of the 5 elements just like plants. They communicate with each other and with us. It’s just that we have blocked our channels to this communication. I would love to have a heart to heart connection with plants and trees. We are here to evolve and serve each other. It’s not through the mind only. I would love to know some practices.
Yes, it’s important to talk to the little plants. Read Journey to Ixtlan.
Hi Kami, I wasn’t quite ready the last time you offered this course but saw every video you did regarding this topic. I tried opening myself up, talking to the plants, welcoming them into my garden, sending them love and light but it is quite hit and miss and quite often I can’t understand what they are communicating… the only plant I have managed to have a deeper connection to is rosemary. I call her mama as she seems to take care of the plants around her and me as well. Her smell especially touches me deep down. I tried… Read more »
Yes, dive into class and you will love it
There is so much I do not know about plant medicine and communication. This topic has always intrigued me and even more so as I continue to move forward as an alternative healer.
I understand what you’re talking about I really love the plants ,being out in the garden watching my babies grow, it’s true you have to feel it!! You should tell them to go in their garden touch the plants look at them build on check the soil if they’ve got plants herbs on the windowsill go over to them touch them and feel it🤗😊
I was so excited to listen to this video and felt really comforted and encouraged by what you said. But at the end, I was really still waiting to hear an actual example from your personal experience of what it’s like when you connect with a plant – very specifically telling the story of how you connect, what it feels like when you receive communication- does it come as a mental image, a mental voice, a vague feeling of intuition somewhere in your body? is it very specific, telling you clear directions? and what do you do then? how do… Read more »
I know, this video was really to just get the conversation going! All of your questions are something that really take time to go in depth around, that is why i created an entire course! It takes time to tell the stories in a way that support you to find your own stories and there are many techniques and ways of interpreting. Thanks for asking

Can one get “vibes” only from living plants, or also from oils and spices? I’ve found that I can tell whether Holy Basil is what I need by sniffing the bottle of capsules, or even just the underside of the lid (so I can hold the seal closed on the bottle). Is this a form of plant communication? I have not “connected” with any other plant in this way. Regarding communication in the other direction, I have some Thyme growing in a pot and it seems to “perk up” when I’ve given it some “face time”, savoring the aroma. I… Read more »
The plants can be fresh or dried, communication can take place in any form.
We are all connected!
How does this apply to a city dweller where you can’t munch on dandelions or plantain in a city park and have unfortunate few encounters with being surrounded by wild plants (in cleaner environments). I once belonged to an herb CSA and had fresh cut herbs delivered to me, but they were already cut. I have grown with some success on my roof small pots of common herbs, but it sounds like those of us less fortunate to be close to nature cannot learn what you are teaching here. What wisdom other than monitoring your own body’s reaction is to… Read more »
HI Lanny,
I have had people activate their plant communication abilities from all walks of life. People that live in the country and people that live in high risers. You can work with house plants, dried plants in your kitchen, trees in the city. It really is possible for anyone living anywhere. Thanks for asking this question
Please notify me when Plant Wisdom is open. Thanks!
I just loved this video and I love all plants. When I die and go to heaven I want to go to God’s gardens. It has been difficult for me to put all that I have learned together from the herb coarse that I completed. I had a wonderful teacher but there is still something missing in my learning process. Thank you for the video.
Thanks for caring!
Fabulous! Looking forward to the course 🙂 Thank you!
Put me on the list please
I grow many many herbs. But still feel that missing piece of direct communications. Sometimes i almost feel like they are whispering but I don’t trust the experience. I love how confident and reassuring you are. Thank you.
I hear you Janet, most of us did not have earth communication validated when we were young, so now we don’t always trust it. That is why i have committed to creating a course to help us feel solid on our communication with the plants. It is an innate skill, but it is like building a muscle, we have to tend to it a little…
You describe my experience quite literally. I grow so many herbs and do spend time with them but still can’t seem to integrate the information into a felt reality. I see them as my friends and allies but don’t hear the language. Always feel like it is a struggle and yet I am called again and again to learn and share. I know what you are suggesting is a piece of the answer. I’ve been blaming my age and worried I just won’t be able to transcend this overwhelm. I am interested in learning how to “be” with the plants… Read more »
please notify me of this class. thanks!
I really appreciate your gentle thoughtful approach to teaching. I remember watching a show on centenarians many years ago and the one thing they seemed to have in common was eating herbs and natural plants every day. Picking a chive or some green and walking was a normal occurrence. I never forgot that and so when I am outside working I try to pick a dandelion green or marigold to nibble on. It feels like a good thing to me. I call it my probiotic. There is so much to learn and the more I learn the more magical life… Read more »
Thank you for this, i am picking little pieces of my plants pretty much all day! Glad to know it’s adding to my longevity!
I am interested in your course. Please add me to your list.

Hi Kami,
If you read about Theresa of Avila, plants would appear in the church where she worshipped. I always sing and bless my plants in my garden and I believe they do respond every day. It’s a beautiful garden. One plant was dying and I kept speaking life to it and it came back. Yes, we can have a relationship with our plants. If we care for them, they will respond and grow so much better. Thank you.
Yes, Grace! I fully believe and have witnessed this myself! They respond to our positive intentions and love just like any other living being. It’s beautiful!
Thank you for sharing and spreading this message!
Kami, your mission is invaluable! So excited you are sharing your medicine in this sacred teaching and path. What you share is so true regarding the personal transformation one experiences when activating your innate ability to communicate with plants. Truly itʻs magical, and certainly increases oneʻs ability to receive from plants myriad ways i.e. healing. Really appreciate you sharing “science” examples which prove the native intelligence of plants. I am excited for your course as it will be transformative and change the way we perceive and move in the world. Huge gratitude!
Thank you Lani!
I am excited about my upcoming course, Plant Wisdom. My hope is that it will help people with all the overwhelm and overload they experience with herbal learning. Putting plant relationship at the center of our herbal studies takes it to another level. Thanks for your kind words.
