Yep, I love bringing the appetizers. Herbal appetizers of course. One more place where you can fill your food with healing herbs.
Hey, can you bring the appetizer?
Yep, I love bringing the appetizers. Herbal appetizers of course. One more place where you can fill your food with healing herbs.
Enter in, one of my favorite party appetizers. Ginger Fig Honey.
I grew up in Vacaville, a town where many Spanish families settled in the 1850’s. With them came many food traditions including olives, fennel and figs.
There are areas outside of town that have giant, old fig trees growing on old homesteads that nobody tends to anymore. However, my grandfather was a forager, we grew up foraging free food that grew wild and figs were on the list.
In the late summer, all it took was a visit to one old fig tree and we would come home with our buckets filled with fresh figs. Most of the fruit from these forgotten trees rotted on the ground. Somehow I could feel that the tree was happy that we remembered it and paid our annual visit.
We couldn’t possibly eat all of the fresh figs, so we would load up my grandpa’s dehydrator and dry them. Well, now dried figs are something that you will usually find in my pantry!
This recipe, actually, I don’t know how I came up with it!
At the time a neighbor had given us a very big batch of honey, so I had a lot of honey and dried figs on hand… The beginning of all great recipes, hmmm, “What do I have? Let’s see if that will work together…”
I like to make up a big batch of this at the beginning of the holiday season and then just have it on hand for whenever I need an appetizer.
This stores well, so you can keep the Ginger Fig Honey in the fridge and it will last for a year. Just buy some crackers and soft cheese and you’ve got an instant crowd-pleaser appetizer.
