Cold and flu season is here, and this is a great herbal honey to add to your food all winter. You can use the honey preventively by putting it into whatever you’re cooking — and if those pre-sickness symptoms arrive at your door, start feeding spoonfuls of it to the people in your household.

Full of incredibly antimicrobial herbs, this herbal honey is a super simple remedy to make and use. The recipe features five common kitchen herbs from your spice rack:

  • Garlic: If you’re getting sick, eat garlic! Garlic contains antimicrobial sulfur compounds. It boosts the production of white blood cells, helping to fight off bacteria and viruses.
  • Rosemary: This aromatic, antibacterial and antiviral herb is very effective when used to prevent colds and flu. Rosemary also improves circulation and gets the blood moving.
  • Thyme: This antibacterial and anti-inflammatory herb is one of our best respiratory remedies, as it expedites healing of wet coughs, congestion, chest colds, and sinus problems.
  • Sage: Sage has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antispasmodic properties that make it an important home remedy for winter wellness and addressing congestion.
  • Oregano: Oregano pacifies respiratory problems. It is antiseptic and expectorant, helping to ease lung congestion, excess phlegm, and bronchial inflammation.

How to Use Winter Colds Honey

You don’t even have to refrigerate this herbal honey for cold and flu season. It can just sit out on the counter so you remember to use it.

Put this honey in your sauces, marinades, soups, and salad dressings to help keep away winter colds. Many spaghetti and red sauces for lasagna, manicotti, and other Italian pasta dishes call for sugar in their recipes. Instead of sugar, you can add 1 to 2 tablespoons of this honey to your red pasta sauce.

You can also take the honey straight by the teaspoonful, or stir 1 teaspoon of honey into hot water to make a powerful tea.
