Horseradish at its best. Clearing out pathogens, stuck mucus and keeping things moving
I am so excited to share this NEW herbal remedy with you.
I have to say, with 30+ years of taking care of colds and congestion using herbs, I have kind of settled into my ‘ways’ of doing things and it has been quite some time since a NEW remedy has been added to my apothecary.
But I recently was given this herbal remedy and it worked so well that I just had to share it with you! It is AH-MAZ-ING for clearing out congestion!
Here’s the story…
One of my very first herb teachers, Jane Bothwell invited me to dinner at her utterly magical home and school, the Dandelion Herbal Center: http://www.dandelionherb.com/
Jane’s home and school is so intriguing, with baskets and plants and herbal remedies all around. She has been teaching community herbalism for more than 40 years and her herb room and gardens are gorgeous!
I studied with Jane in the mid-1980’s and her teachings have filled my life for so many years. If you ever get a chance to take a class at her school, do it! It is worth a road trip from anywhere!
After eating an herb filled meal, plenty of herbal drinks and talking non-stop herbal gossip, it was time to say good bye. As I was walking out the door she said, “Here, we just made this in class, go ahead and take this”
WOW! I knew it was horseradish, but it tasted so good and went down so easy! Over the next 3 weeks I ate the entire jar and set out to make it myself!
Thank you Jane!
This remedy is horseradish. You know, like the wasabi that comes with sushi. Have you ever eating too much wasabi or horseradish sauce and suddenly your head is throbbing, eyes turning red, tears gushing down your face, ears tingling, snot dripping from your nose – and then it all stops.
You catch your breath and notice your head is clear, your sinuses have opened up and you feel pretty good!
This is one HOT remedy.
If you are pregnant, menopausal or are always hot, this is not the remedy for you.
But, if you tend to run cold, if certain foods cause mucus, if you feel like you ate something that is causing congestion, a little horseradish may be the perfect thing.
Yes, I said a little… You know that saying, “A little dab will do ya”.
This is an herb, where if it isn’t right for you or if you take too much, it can cause a headache and heat symptoms.
I love to take a bite of this after eating meat or dairy or a heavier meal. Or if I wake up in the morning with congestion, just a ¼ teaspoon of this horseradish apple slush, added to my tea, takes care of it.
So, I think you get the gest, this remedy has to be right for you and the situation and taken in small amounts.
What makes this remedy so good is the addition of apple. The sweetness and cooling nature of apple, helps calm the heating effects of the horseradish and make it palatable!
The one thing I recommend, is to use a sweeter apple if you can. Of course, use whatever kind of apple you have access to, but I found that a sweet apple is tastes better than a more tart or sour apple.
Fresh horseradish is often found at bigger grocery stores. It is also very easy to grow. Once it gets established in the garden, it can really take off.
The honey, vinegar and salt help to preserve it and the honey also helps the horseradish go down a little easier.

I am actually super excited to try this!! ❤
do you have to peel the horseradish root?
I don’t
Kami, we have been so blessed with your sharing and selfless giving!
Thank you
Thanks for all this knowllege
Wow! I wonder if this would make a good anti-allergy remedy in the mornings? My daughter wakes up sometimes with sinus congestion and sneezing in the morning.
Give it a try, it is not for every day use, it is too hot, but in the spring, try it for a few days and see if it helps her
I’m wondering what you’d recommend for those with menopausal hot flashes? so many remedies involve “hot/ heat creating” herbs / foods.
Actually, I’m asking not for hot flash remedies (althogh those would be welcome).
I’m wondering about remedies like the fire cider and the horseradish.
I’ve learned from experience, that golden seal/echinacea tincture/s , as well as ginger, etc. bring on flashes…though raw garlic (my fave remedy) doesn’t seem to.
Thanks, Kami!

This remedy is not for someone that is already too hot.
With menopause you look for remedies that support the adrenals like tulsi and dont do remedies that are full of horseradish ( as you know!)
Thank you! I can’t wait to try. My Grandma made a similar recipe with ground up beets. Always at Easter. Yum! Addicting 😊
oh interesting, with beets instead of apples. I wonder who taught her to do that?
Hey Kami have you tried Fermenting this without vinegar and honey? Seems like it could be delish
no, i haven’t fermented horseradish. I have put a little horseradish in my fermenting sauerkraut, but not just a straight batch of fermenting horseradish…
I made the recipe and I will make it for sure again. It is delicious!
Thank you very much!
Do you peel the horseradish and apple?
I don’t peel either one
Can this be canned?
Hmmm, i have no idea… time to experiment~!
Do you have to have the apple in there?
well, without the apple, the horseradish is overwhelming
One of those must try things! But I still have my ginger lemon honey to use, I just made that – next will be horseradish apple! I think I will cut the recipe in half, I can find half a cup of horseradish in the garden I think, as long as the ground does not freeze hard. I remember dad digging it in the winter, it was a staple with boiled potatoes and soup beef.
Thanks Kami! Do you think this could be divided up and then frozen?
I haven’t frozen it yet, but i think it would be fine, give it a try~
Thank you for this remedy! Can’t wait to make this!!
I can’t wait to make this! My husband was just complaining today of getting a “cold”. I have horseradish in the garden and sweet apples in the kitchen! I have my organic vinegar and honey too!
You are ready to go!
growing apples and horseradish, planning on starting bees this year. this sounds like the perfect recipe for my use. when I worked Forest service fire crew I kept a jar of horseradish in my pack to clear the smoke congestion. that was straight horseradish, this will be much better. Retired from that job a couple decades ago but there arte still causes og congestion. Thank you for sharing. I have your book and will put this in it.
Wow, straight horseradish to clear smoke fire congestion. That is one heck of an herbal remedy!
Thank you for this remedy! How long will it keep in the fridge?
3 months
This seems a nice alternative to FireCider.
I still use my fire cider, i just really liked the apples with the horseradish for this one
Hi Kami!
I am currently using the Fire Cider. It really works! I am going to try this as well!
Thanks so much for sharing! Hugs and love to you!
