Cold and flu season is here.
Wouldn’t it be nice to just be able to prevent a cold before it takes hold? This tea is our go-to tea when we feel like there is some cold and flu grunge in the air.
You can purchase fresh ginger root at the grocery store.
Ginger has antimicrobial properties that help to fight off colds and flu. You can drink a couple cups of this tea a day whenever someone around you is sick. Or when you go to the store and everyone in line is coughing and sneezing. Yikes, get home and drink your tea!
Ginger Cold Buster
Drink this hot at the very first sign of anyone around you being sick. The ginger, lemon and honey all work synergistically to help you fight off nasty bacteria. Be well!
Ingredients
- 1 cup of water
- 1 tablespoon fresh ginger root
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
Instructions
- Place chopped fresh ginger root into a pot with a lid on it. I use stainless steel Revere pots; glass and enamel pots also work well
- Bring water and herbs to a boil and then immediately turn off the fire
- Let ginger steep for one hour
- Using a metal strainer, remove the ginger from the tea
- Re-heat the ginger tea
- Add honey and lemon
- Drink warm or at room temperature
- The shelf life of this tea is about two days if kept in the refrigerator
This is MY go to drink when I feel any sort of cold or chill in my body or scrath in the throat. Even my kids and grandkids drink it!! Made many feel better offering this tea!!

Heating honey destroys the therapeutic benefits. How can this be avoided by adding to a hot liquid? Is there a certain temperature to avoid other than lukewarm?
I add the honey, when it stops steaming…

I just tried your wonderful brew. I’m feeling so much better. I do hope that I can drink it with out being sick because it’s my new favorite drink.
I am so glad it helped you! Have you checked out the Herbal Kitchen, there are lots of other great recipes!
I don’t have any fresh ginger right now, but somehow I have two new cans of ground ginger. Can this recipe be made with ground ginger? Also, can I use lemon essential oil instead of fresh lemon?
HI Dana,
Dried ginger is much hotter and more concentrated than frish ginger. You can use half the amount of dried ginger, or even a little less. I would not use lemon essential oil instead of lemon.
Lemon essential is also hightly concentrated
Is it possible to substitute the lemon for an orange? I’m out of lemon and don’t want to get out in the cold.
That would be perfect…..
I have used this for years and LOVE it, whether I am sick (which is RARE) or not. But I am lazy and put the ginger root into a coffee filter and use a clothespin to pin the filter to the side of the pan, lol. I keep my gingerroot in the freezer (with peel) so I can have it when ever I want.
Will this tea work if you seep a slice of lemon and peel with the ginger. I also noticed that the Ginger was not peeled, is there a reason for this?
Yes you can steep a slice of lemon with this. You can also peel the ginger if you like. It is a matter of preference if you like to peel your ginger or not
Thanks Kami. I am already sick but am making this now. Love fresh ginger
