It is easy to put together and is so versatile in its uses.
I mix up a quart of this at a time and it doesn’t last long!
We keep a small bowl of Sesame Chive Sprinkle on the kitchen table and sprinkle it on savory breakfast dishes, hummus, tacos, sandwiches and soups.
Sesame Chive Sprinkle
A super simple and highly nutritious sprinkle you can add to so many savory dishes.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
- 2 tablespoons finely chopped dried chives
- 1 teaspoon small pieces or powdered seaweed (wakame, nori, hijiki, dulse or arame)
- ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
Instructions
- Measure out the ingredients
- Mix the dried chives, black pepper and the finely minced seaweed of your choice into the sesame seeds
- Put some of the Sesame Chive Sprinkle into a little bowl with a spoon and keep it on your kitchen table
- Put the remainder of the sprinkle into a jar with a lid for storage. Keep it close by, because you will be filling the bowl on the table often!
- Sprinkle onto salad, eggs, rice and veggie dishes
Sesame seeds are loaded with calcium. Chives contain plenty of vitamins A and C and are a powerful anti-oxidant. Black pepper is one of the most effective herbal carminitives. Carminitive herbs bring blood and oxygen to the digestive tract, helping you to digest your meal. Seaweed is a superfood containing loads of minerals.
The combination of all of these ingredients together is nothing but delicious and nutritious. Some people have difficulty eating seaweed because of its strong taste and scent. When mixed together these ingredients meld into a crunchy pleasant flavor. The sesame seeds absorb the intensity of the seaweed and the pepper and chives add a pungent note that enhances any salad or leafy green dish.
If you are looking to enhance the nutritional content of your food, this one simple recipe delivers big time. Seaweed is a super food that is one of the most nutritionally dense plants on the planet. It is high in calcium and potassium and alkalizes the blood.
Sesame Chive Sprinkle is good for anyone, but is especially supportive for menopausal women. The seaweed helps to cool the body and the pepper and chives enhance the sometimes sluggish digestion that can occur during menopause. The rich mineral content is helpful for menopause and women of all ages.
Let me know what foods you like to add it to and Happy Sprinkling!
Hi… I have lots of green onions. Will those do the job in place of chives?
Sure, if you like the flavor of green onions
Onion chives or garlic chives or it doesn’t matter?
You may choose either one. Enjoy!
love those inventive sprinkles…need some of the ingredients when next shoping.
Love all the ingredients. Only noticed the chives are dried. That means i will need to dry a bunch of my chives to make this recipe. Also, will need to think of the best crumbled seaweed to use as well. I love seaweed, i can eat it all by itself. Thank you for sharing.
Hi Kami,
Thank you for all the terrific posts. I cant wait to make my own salad dressing and pesto. I was wondering if you can suggest a different seed in the sprinkles, I’m allergic to sesame ?.
you can use flax seed or leave the seeds out
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR WONERFUL NATURAL RECIPES WHICH I ENJOY MAKING AND USING KAMI
Hello Kami, thank you for all your interesting information and easy-to-follow recipes. Your book The Herbal Kitchen is an everyday presence in my kitchen. I’m Italian (live in Florence, Italy) and all you say beautifully relates with and enhances what I’ve learned from my mother and our local cooking (and healing) traditions. (But we have lost so much and younger people know so little about herbal remedies. That’s so sad!)
I always read your posts with great joy and gratefulness. Thank you for your knowledge and generosity.

Hi Annalisa,
Awwww, thank you. So glad you like The Herbal Kitchen!Yes, got to keep the herbal traditions alive!
Hello Kami, first of all thank you for your lovely lavander hearts, the other night started to watch the video and didn’t want to leave it for another day… at least made one to get the going and yes**** is lovely, I made it with felt fabric, maybe is a bit fine but hope is ok. Love the sitches* Thank you for these ideas, many times part of the chive is wasted as I don’t use it everyday, I found this video with no need of dehydrator: going to try, seems ok for others: How to dry Garlic Chives https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mpj74ZSkjvY… Read more »
Can you recommend where to get dried chives and small pieces of seaweed? Not something found on my grocery shelves or even in the next “big” city over. Small town America does online ordering for most things.
(Oh, and kudos for having your comment form do keyboard-selection. It is so nice to see Internet done right)
Hi Carolyn, There is a great resource on my website under resources section that lists where i get all my herbal supplies, including how you can have herbs sent straight to your door! Check it out: https://kamimcbride.com/medicine-making-resources/
