I hope you never need this toothache remedy, but just in case you do, here it goes. If you look up toothache herbal remedies, most herb books say to chew on cloves for toothache. When I was on my knees from tooth pain, cloves just did not quite cut it. But I found another effective herbal remedy that is good for a toothache: ginger.
That Time I Needed to Get Rid of a Toothache Fast
I have several teeth that are compromised. I grew up eating Lucky Charms, Pop-Tarts and Frosted Flakes for breakfast. By the time I was 10 years old, I had a mouth full of cavities. Mercury filled every molar in my mouth.
In my twenties I learned about eating healthy and ditched the cereals and all kinds of other processed foods that I had eaten throughout my childhood.
But you don’t get new teeth; the damage had been done. To this day I have trouble with my teeth and have to really take care of them.
Recently, one of my back molars failed. I woke up in the morning and could hardly get out of bed, my toothache was so bad! Later, when looking at the X-ray of the tooth, you could see that there was hardly any tooth left; it was mostly one giant filling! My poor tooth, it had been drilled out of my head before I was even a teenager.
Needing a toothache remedy, I crawled downstairs and stuffed some cloves in my mouth; I waited awhile and was still in pain. Unfortunately, that herbal remedy just didn’t cut it.
My husband said he would go to the store and get me some over-the-counter pain medication because I couldn’t get in to see the dentist until the following day.
I rarely take any kind of medications, so when I agreed that he should go pick me up something from the pharmacy, that gives you an idea of just how desperate I was.
Benefits of Ginger for Toothache
While he was gone, ginger popped into my mind as an herbal toothache remedy. I started thinking about the strong anti-inflammatory action of ginger and decided to just put a quarter-sized piece of fresh ginger in my mouth. I bit into the fresh ginger root and stuffed it into the area of the throbbing tooth.
Within two minutes, my pain was gone. Not just less, but GONE!
The cloves had reduced my toothache, but not gotten rid of it. The ginger took it away completely. Awesome.
I never took the pain pills Michael brought home, but just replaced the fresh ginger root every couple of hours and it kept me pain free for the next 24 hours until I could get into the dentist. Thank you, ginger!
Ginger is good for teeth and gums because it is anti-inflammatory as well as antibacterial. Fresh ginger contains a proteolytic enzyme that reduces inflammation and helps to repair damaged tissue.
How to Use Ginger as a Toothache Remedy
Although fresh ginger may be the best herbal remedy, sometimes you just have to use what you have on hand. Here are a few ways you could use ginger for a toothache:
- Fresh ginger: Bite down on a quarter-sized slice of fresh ginger root and let the juices coat the toothache area.
- Dried ginger: Mix dried, ground ginger with a little warm water to make a ginger paste and use it to coat the area.
- Fresh ginger tea: Make a cup of ginger tea (honey and lemon optional) and swish the cooled tea around the tooth before swallowing.
- Ginger tea bag: Moisten a ginger tea bag with some warm water and stuff it into the toothache area. Or make a cup of tea and swish as above.
You may need to replace the ginger with a new batch every couple hours or so. If the toothache does not improve, see your dentist.
Wow! I have been in pain for about 8 hours straight something told me to grab my phone and search natural remedies for tooth aches since I’m breast feeding this saved me!! Luckily I always have fresh fruits veggies and herbs at home can I just say thank you. First I juiced some fresh ginger added a little warm water and swished it around that brought the pain from a 10 to about a 4 then I sliced another piece bit down and almost immediately it felt like a heavy weight was coming off my swollen gums it’s been about… Read more »

I am so glad you found relief!
Thanks so much for this tooth pain remedy!
Awesome info! I had not taken good care of my teeth as a kid & had lots of fillings. Wish I had known about ginger before I had my root canal. I was on Rx pain meds for 3 days before my root canal. Yuck! Thanks for sharing you knowledge & caring heart❣️
Great and timely information. I was diagnosed with a Lyme disease co-infection a few years ago. One of my symptoms was “dry mouth”. No one informed me of the damage to my teeth this would cause…not even my dentist. Decalcification ensued causing sensitivity and decay. As a result, my dentist visits are expensive and often. Your ginger tip is perfect for my situation as getting an appointment for treatment is an experiment in patience.
Thank you for all you do Kami.
I hope I never need this cure too. In my opinion teeth are a losing game. If we live long enough, at least some of them are gonna cause us trouble. Thanks Kami!
Trying this now to see if GINGER stops toothaches. TBD
Had a moving tooth abscess that impacted my head and my ear the whole side of my face was just furious of pain.i took antibotics but still had and after math pain affect. Was dealing with this pain for two weeks I tried turmeric cayenne pepper salt regular idonie salt and himilayan salt. Then today had a little aggravation with my tooth wasn’t as bad as my previous pain but enough to make you not want to socialize or… Read more »
I totally agree with this article. I accidently found ginger myself because i was in excruciating pain when my molar got pulpitus and got infected. Antibiotics and pain meds did NOTHING!!!! I ODed on aleve but didnt feel a thing. I desperating tried ginger by just cutting a bunch and putting it in cold water. I would use this to gargle and rinse. To my relief the pain was GONE. Holy smokes. Pain was at 100 and went down to zero. It was to the point where I lost sleep for 3 days before finding ginger. It was that BAD.… Read more »

Your article was both well written and very informative.
If it’s okay I’d like to post your suggestions as well as this article to my Pinterest board called Long Life.
Giving you credit and highlighting the fact you found ginger to more helpful in your case.
Versus the suggested clove; I’ve heard so much about.
Thanks again for sharing yourself and your many useful years of experiences.

HI Toni,
Sorry, i can’t give advice like that over email. That is something that you really need to find a holistic practitioner to work one on one with you to get to the actual root cause of the migraines.
You can look here to find a naturopath in your area: http://www.naturopathic.org
I used clove oil to get rid of pain in my tooth
Great remedy, Thanks!
Stopped off at a health food store and for some unknown reason bought a fresh piece of garlic thinking I could boil it and rinse my mouth where I had the most horrific pain in my back molar. Don’t know where I goth the idea-it just “popped into my head.” Just came home and put the question into Google and got this amazing response. Right now I have a quarter size piece of ginger in my mouth and the PAIN IS GONE…..WOW! Thanks so much for this amazing tip.
I am so glad you found this, I know, it helps so much!!
This helped immensely! Brought the pain down to a three from a ten!!
Thank you thank you thank you! I use ginger all the time! Wish I didn’t need it on my tooth right now but it’s helping! Thank to you! Blessings
Wow. This really works. I am trying it right now. Oregano oil also works but it tends to burn the skin off your lips.
[…] The Best Toothache Remedy […]
We have been using Ginger almost exclusively in tea with various other herbs and love it but this morning my wife woke up with a slight toothache and wa-la I saw your post. Fifteen minutes later my wife was all smiles the pain gone. Granted it was not the kind of pain that puts you in tears but it did the job. I will post a link to your site on my Blog. Thank you so much for one more reason to grow my own Ginger.
