We’ve all been there before—you get invited to a party, and you run through the appetizer Rolodex in your mind trying to figure out which dish to bring.

Your household is herbified, and you use lots of herbs every day to make your snacks and meals medicinal. Not everyone at the gathering you are going to is into herbs, so it’s all about finding that middle ground. Something they already like and relate to and adding a delicious herbal twist to it.

“Lavender laced whipped goat cheese is an appetizer and a showstopper all in one.”

This appetizer is about taking a standard appetizer and making it herbal! Whipped goat cheese! Delicious, nutritious and as herbal as you feel like taking it! It’s a fantastic source of protein, calcium, and healthy fats, and it doubles as a beautiful dip or spread perfect for any occasion. And what’s better than throwing some herbs into the mix? Adding fresh lavender, honey, and lemon not only supports digestion but also infuses the whipped cheese with a delightful tangy and floral flavor.

My lavender laced whipped goat cheese is an appetizer and a showstopper all in one. Its stunning presentation makes it a perfect, herb-focused centerpiece for any occasion.

What is Whipped Goat Cheese?

When I bring this dish to a gathering, I often get asked why I whip the goat cheese instead of just rolling a log of it into some herbs. It’s simple, really—it gives it texture and flavor! Whipping goat cheese transforms its dense, crumbly texture into something light, airy, and wonderfully spreadable. This change in texture allows the cheese to blend seamlessly with other ingredients, creating a more harmonious taste.

The addition of honey and lemon adds a hint of sweetness and acidity, balancing the natural tanginess of the goat cheese. Fresh lavender lends a subtle floral note that elevates the entire dish, making it both unique and memorable. If you don’t have any fresh lavender, try using another edible flower like borage, nasturtium (for a spicy kick), rose petals, or chive blossoms for a more savory twist.

Health Benefits of Goat Cheese

Goat cheese is not just yummy but also incredibly good for you.

  • It’s packed with protein.
  • It’s also a great source of calcium, vital for maintaining those strong bones and teeth we all need.
  • Goat cheese also contains vitamins A, B2, and D, as well as minerals like phosphorus, and potassium.

One of the most incredible things about goat cheese is that it’s an excellent option for people who can’t have regular cow’s milk. If you’re lactose intolerant or have a sensitivity to cow’s milk, you may still be able to tolerate goat’s milk products.

The science behind it is pretty fascinating:

  • Goat milk has less lactose than cow milk, making it easier on many people’s stomachs.
  • The fat globules in goat milk are also smaller, which helps your digestive system handle them better.
  • Many people find goat milk proteins less allergenic than cow’s milk. This can mean less bellyaches and more enjoyment of dairy.

What Are the Health Benefits of Lavender?

Lavender (Lavandula spp.) is renowned for its calming and soothing properties. When included in your food, it can help create a relaxing eating experience, easing tension and promoting relaxation. It also supports digestion, and soothes bloating and discomfort.

Additionally, lavender helps protect your body against oxidative stress and inflammation. By adding lavender into your whipped goat cheese with herbs, you can enjoy the delightful blend of flavors while reaping the benefits of this wonderful plant.

Health Benefits of Honey

Adding honey into your whipped goat cheese adds a touch of sweetness and a wealth of health benefits—especially when it’s locally sourced and organic. It’s rich in antioxidants, which boost your immune system and can help with occasional inflammation.

One of honey’s standout features is its ability to soothe sore throats and act as a natural cough suppressant. This makes it a wonderful addition to your diet, especially during cold and flu season. Its antimicrobial properties can also help fight off bacteria and infections.

Whipped Goat Cheese with Fresh Lavender

Author: Kami McBride

Ingredients

For the Whipped Goat Cheese

  • 8 oz goat cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream (or coconut cream for a dairy-free alternative)
  • 2 tsp fresh lavender buds (or another edible flower or herb, like borage, nasturtium, or chives)
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp lemon zest
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For Serving

  • Fresh herbs (such as thyme, oregano, rosemary)
  • Toasted crostinis (optional)
  • Fresh blackberries (optional)
  • Additional honey, for drizzling (optional)

Instructions

  • In a medium bowl, combine the softened goat cheese and heavy cream. Use a hand mixer or a stand mixer with the whisk attachment to whip the mixture until it is light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Gently fold in the fresh lavender flowers, honey, lemon zest, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix until well combined. Be cautious with the lavender, starting with 1 tsp and adding more if desired, to avoid bitterness.
  • Taste the whipped goat cheese and adjust the seasoning with more salt or honey as needed.
  • Transfer the whipped goat cheese to a serving dish. Sprinkle with a pinch of fresh lavender flowers and/or fresh herbs (like thyme, oregano, or rosemary).
  • Serve the whipped goat cheese on toasted crostinis. Top each crostini with a fresh blackberry and a drizzle of honey, if desired.
  • Sprinkle your serving plate with lavender!
