Kids love making smoothies and the great thing about smoothies is that you can add all kinds of delicious nutritious ingredients to a basic fruit smoothie.

Empower your children with the blender and inspire them to make their own smoothie drinks. Have fun experimenting with what you have on hand. It is such a great alternative to replace all of the high fructose corn syrup popsicles, ice pops, snow cones and the endless onslaught of insulting snacks marketed to children.

There are lots of great smoothie recipes out there, and you can take them a step further by getting into the mindset of adding herbal teas to your smoothies!

My son makes his own smoothies sometimes for breakfast and often when he gets home from school; this is his go-to snack.

Do you put herbal tea in your smoothies? Well, it’s easy and it adds a whole other level of nutrition vitamins and minerals, healthy and yumminess to those smoothies.

Begin by making an herbal tea of choice so you have tea on hand to add to the smoothie. The herbal teas contribute a kaleidoscope of nutrients and flavour that turns smoothie making into an altogether different experience than regular smoothie making!

Some of the herbal teas that we add to our smoothies are hibiscus, peppermint, spearmint, rose petals, lemon verbena and lemon balm.

How to make herbal tea for your smoothie

  1. Put 1 tablespoon of fresh or dried herb per every cup of water used
  2. Place loose herbs and water into a pot with the lid on it. I use stainless steel Revere pots; glass and enamel pots also work well
  3. Bring water and herbs to a boil and then immediately turn off the stove
  4. Let herbs steep for one hour
  5. Use a strainer and remove the herbs from the tea and pour the tea into a teacup or pitcher

There is really no end to the combinations you can come up with, but here is a starting point recipe that we really enjoy!
