St. John’s wort is one of my first loves in the plant world. I could talk for days about how much I love it and all the stories of how it has healed me, my family and so many people in my life.
Let’s just say this is truly one of my favorite plants. St. John’s wort oil is possibly the most used remedy in my Home Wellness Tool Kit.
Here I share (just a few, not too gory) stories of St. John’s wort, including my non-herbal husband’s big burn experience and how he brags about what St. John’s wort oil did for him. Make yourself a cup of tea and let me tell you about this one day when…
If these stories are helpful to you, come join me in my Handcrafted Healing Herbal Oils course. I created this course to help both beginners and experienced herbalists feel confident in their oil-making process. You’ll learn how to make more potent, extra-strength herbal oils you can use in salves, body butters, and all kinds of body care.

I’m wondering if topical SJW is counterindicated for those of us taking antidepressants… I have made several of your amazing infused oils on the last new months and im astounded by their potency! Ive been using an arnica, sjw and yarrow blend to massage my calves due to achilles tendonitis and ive been having a rough time the last few days regulating my emotions, which is not normal… im also perimenopausal so it coukd be anything, am i right? thank you so much for your generous teachings and guidance!
The topical oils targets a specific part of the body and the medicine doesn’t enter the blood stream like taking it interally does so it doens’t have the same countraindications. Of course, if you do feel like it’s negatively affecting you, you could remove it from your blend. I’d recommend tracking your emotions to see if it’s the sjw or anything else.
I’ve just started using a St John’s Wort salve (that I made last year from some oil I infused) on my feet. I’ve developed Plantar Faciitis, an annoying foot ache/pain, probably from being on my feet all day gardening! I just started rubbing it into my feet three or four times per day. So far I do think it’s helping. Fingers crossed!!!
I mix St. John’s Wort oil with lavender oil and use it to heal rashes, aches and pains. In fact, I use it all over my body at night. You told about this blend, Kami and I love it.
Will this stain clothing? If so, how do you use this for massage clients?
It doesn’t leave a color stain, but all oils leave stains. For massage clients, I soak the sheets in vinegar, wash them in warm water and if possible hang them out on the line to dry.
My husband surprised me last summer by coming home with the bed of his pickup full of SJW~~better than a bouquet of roses in my book! I made lots of oil and tincture. Love to use them layered…first the tincture then the oil. The tincture works well for nerve pain (like sciatica), and is easier for people to use when they are working and don’t want to get oil on their clothes. I just took a big spray bottle of the tincture to an 89 yr old aunt with neuropathy pain in her feet; she can spritz and get relief.… Read more »
Good husband!!!
For years I have used SJW oil with some essential oils for my wrists when they swell from over-use. I used to be able to harvest it in the wild where I lived before but now I only have access to dried as it is considered an invasive plant in Alberta and growing it is illegal. So I don’t have the pretty red colour but it still seems to work well.
